And so Material Moods came to life — an ode to the cobbled streets, green grass fields and windswept beaches we call home.

The Concrete Catwalk exec team crafted this year’s theme almost instantly, a sort of epiphany that hit our Event Executive Sabrina and ignited the rest of us. We unanimously felt that, after 11 years of its inception, it was time to go back to the heart of this organisation’s vision. And so Material Moods came to life — a theme that is an ode to the cobbled streets, green grass fields and windswept beaches we call home.

This year, our focus shifts to explore the materiality of fashion, thinking of “material” not just as fabric texture, but also as the very terrain that shapes our everyday lives.  A concept that is deeply rooted in Concrete Catwalk’s identity. “Concrete” is defined as a mixture of stone, sand, cement and water, yet also speaks to what it is authentic and unmistakably real, grounded in the world we inhabit. As students make their daily struts to class, we document their fashion against the backdrop of ancient stone walls, cobbled alleyways and pristine golf greens.

The editorial that follows, crafted by our Creative Directors Diana and Charlotte, invites you on a journey, uncovering the moods, textures, and materials that define the fashion of St Andrews, where every look tells a story centuries in the making.

Stone

Zara is embodying perhaps the most present of St Andrews’ material influences: stone. From cobbled streets to crumbly stone walls, this element pervades our daily existences, as the building block of the University’s historic campus as well as the slippery surface we treacherously tread on during never-ending rainy days. Zara reinvents the deep grey tones through a monochrome look that nods to the boho-chic revival. High neck sleeveless turtleneck, grey wide leg jeans and a scarf wrapped around her waist, she is one with the century-old stone yet feels intrinsically modern.

Water

The ebbs and flows of the North Sea washing the town’s coast are the soundtrack of long walks and sleepless nights. Jing embodies that very sense of perpetual movement and fluid unpredictability which is distinctive of the sea’s foamy waves. Gliding down sandy steps towards Castle Sands, Jing comes in and out of vision as her pale pink ruffled dress blurs into dusky reflections on the water. Embodying the restless energy of glass waves, each step echoes the tide’s rhythm, a living reflection of the coast’s timeless pulse.

Grass

The sun has set, the town glows with scattered lights, yet life on the golf course continues. Emblem of St Andrews, the Old Course’s sweeping green is the home of professional golfers and students alike. Lynn captures the essence of golf chic: a style crafted through timeless silhouettes, good tailoring and elegant lines. Honouring the course’s storied legacy, Lynn embodies our take on modern golfing woman—effortlessly ready to play at five and dine at seven.

Concrete

We end this journey going back to the element that defines our name: concrete. At night, the starkly lit streets and dark cobbled alleyways transform the medieval town into a film noir set. Euan embodies the essence of dark academia, wearing a twisted collared shirt tucked under a cable-knit wool jumper, with slacks and loafers, all layered underneath a tailored black coat. Set against ancient stone, smoky passages and shadowed corners, the past and present of St Andrews converge in a single frame.
